The first-ever International Surfing Association (ISA) World Adaptive Surfing Championship took place in La Jolla, CA and brought together the adaptive surfing community from around the world. This inaugural event  commenced September 24, 2015 at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion at 4:00pm with a Beach Boys prelude by city organist Dr. Carol Williams. The Olympic-style Opening Ceremonies, complete with a "Parade of Nations" and a "Sands of the World" ceremony, began at 4:30pm. The ISA unified global efforts for the advancement of Adaptive Surfing through partnerships with the City of San Diego, Park & Recreation, and Challenged Athletes Foundation. An official Honorary Commitee supporting the event is made up of prominent members of the San Diego and surf communities including Mayor Kevin Faulconer and surf legend Shaun Tomson. This World Championship represented 20 countries and served as the preeminent platform for surfers with physical disabilities to display their talents in competition.
