During 2014 & 2015

The City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture oversees the conservation and management of the artworks owned and controlled by the City. In preparation for the Balboa Park Centennial Celebration, the Commission recently completed the conservation and restoration of the following artworks in Balboa Park:

  • El Cid Campeador sculpture by Anna Hyatt Huntington
  • La Tehuana sculpture by Donal Hord
  • John D. Spreckles by James Tank Porter
  • House of Hospitality bas-relief by Rose Hanks
  • David Charles Collier by Frederick Schwiegardt
  • Four bronze sculptures by Ruth Hayward (Kate O. Sessions, Alonzo Horton, Ephraim Morse, and George White Marston)
  • The Four Cornerstones of American Democracy Fountain by Frederick Schwiegardt
  • Progress of Man mural by Belle Baraceanu
  • Night Visions installation by Roberto Salas
  • Bird Frieze by Raul Guerrero

The main objective of the treatments was to prevent further deterioration of the artworks and achieve overall integrated visual restorations. The Commission contracted with conservators and art technicians to conserve, restore, and stabilize the artworks.
